Millemix put down after accident on gallops
Millemix, a leading fancy for the French Derby, was put down following an accident on the gallops at Chantilly today.
The colt, trained by Criquette Head-Maarek and owned by her father Alec, broke his leg in five places.
“He was a horse I liked very much and I’m very sorry for my father,” said Head-Maarek. “He wouldn’t have been favourite in the French Derby but he would have gone close.”
The son of Linamix was being ridden by Christophe Lemaire in the training exercise when he suffered his fatal accident.
“It was no-one’s fault – there was no hole in the ground,” added the trainer. “We took him to the clinic but they couldn’t save him.”
Millemix would have been one of the major contenders for the Prix du Jockey-Club on Sunday week after staking his claim for the Chantilly Classic with excellent efforts on his last two starts.
After winning the Group Two Prix Greffuhle at Longchamp a month ago, he was beaten a nose by Voix Du Nord in the Group One Prix Lupin over the same 10 and a half furlongs earlier this month.
