Bookmakers Ladbrokes have suspended betting on the Flat Jockeys' Championship in the wake of the controversy surrounding champion jockey Kieren Fallon.

Fallon had been the 1-3 favourite to land a seventh title in eight years, but faces a 21-day ban at a hearing of the Jockey Club for failing to ride out for first place at Lingfield last Tuesday.

That is before investigations take place into the unusual betting patterns on the race reported by exchange firm Betfair and the Jockey Club study a dossier from the News Of The World, who alleged that Fallon told undercover journalists before the race that Rye would beat his mount Ballinger Ridge.

Ladbrokes now want to see how the case develops before reopening their book.

Spokesman Balthazar Fabricius said: "In light of what has happened we want to keep our powder dry and let the dust settle."
