Alner: Nothing sinister behind Kingscliff move

Robert Alner has reassured punters that Kingscliff remains on course for the Tote Cheltenham Gold Cup in March.

Robert Alner has reassured punters that Kingscliff remains on course for the Tote Cheltenham Gold Cup in March.

The seven-year-old was the subject of some strong support yesterday, despite suffering a shock defeat in the Peter Marsh Chase at Haydock on his last run.

Alner later discovered the gelding had pulled muscles in his shoulder and withers and has sent Kingscliff to equine physio Mary Bromiley for treatment.

However, Alner still expects his charge will be ready for a clash with reigning champion Best Mate on March 18.

He told the Racing Post: “She (Bromiley) lives on Exmoor and we took him down to her event yard. She found he has pulled muscles in his shoulder and withers.

“He will stay with her until he’s better. I don’t know how long that will be but it does not threaten his participation at Cheltenham, it is only muscle damage.

“There is nothing sinister about him staying there, it is convenience. He will be just up the road from Mary and she can see him three times a week or whenever she wants.”
