Last season’s Smurfit Champion Hurdle victor has been beaten three times since his 11-length victory at Cheltenham and could bid to regain the winning thread at the Merseyside track.

Another interesting entry is the ex-Australian Specular, who could make his British debut for trainer Jonjo O’Neill and owner JP McManus.

Howard Johnson’s big-spending owner Graham Wylie has Inglis Drever and Chivalry engaged in the Grade Two contest.

Both horses, purchased by Johnson, are unbeaten over hurdles to date.

Royal Rosa could step up in class in the Premier Stayers’ Hurdle, having won his only start over timber in a novices’ event at Hexham last month.

The five-year-old, who won three bumpers last term, including a Grade One at Punchestown in April for trainer Nicky Henderson, is another of the expensive purchases made by the County Durham trainer on behalf of Wylie, costing a record 340,000 guineas at the Doncaster Sales in May.
