American Post wins Racing Post Trophy
American Post recorded a decisive victory for Chantilly trainer Criquette Head-Maarek in the Racing Post Trophy at Doncaster this afternoon.
The field for the Group One contest was reduced to just four after the withdrawals of Cape Fear yesterday and Mikado today.
Christophe Soumillon had the French colt in touch with the leader Magritte, and the Belgian-born jockey sent the 5-6 favourite to the front approaching the final furlong.
The result was never in doubt as American Post strode clear.
American Post earned a quote of 8-1 for the 2000 Guineas and 12-1 for the Vodafone Derby from Ladbrokes with his one-and-three-quarter-length call over the staying-on Fantastic View.
Early leader Magritte, attempting to give Aidan O’Brien his fifth success in the one-mile Group One contest, kept on for third.
The only other French-trained winner of the prestigious contest was Green Dancer in 1974, who was trained by Alec Head, the father of today’s winning handler.
