Ten-day ban for Carter

Gary Carter was upset at being banned for 10 days for failing to make sufficient effort aboard 4-1 favourite Lilli Marlane in the Thoroughbred Breeders Association Handicap at Ascot.

The George Margarson-trained filly made late headway from off the pace to finish a never-nearer fifth behind 7-1 winner Gems Bond.

And at a subsequent stewards' inquiry into the performance of the favourite, the stewards ruled that Carter had breached Rule 158.

Margarson told the inquiry that he had been happy to let Carter ride his usual race aboard Lilli Marlane, as he was the filly's usual jockey.

But he added that he felt the jockey had made insufficient effort in the final three furlongs of the race.

Consequently, the stewards opted to punish Carter for his ride without penalising trainer or horse.

Carter said afterwards: "She hasn't run for six weeks and she's had to miss quite a bit of work.

"The stewards told me that she had gone from 3-1 to 9-2 on the betting exchanges but what is that supposed to mean to me?"

His suspension runs from October 6-15 and Carter was non-committal about whether to lodge an appeal.
