Somnus lands dream victory
Somnus (12-1) sprung a major shock when lowering the colours of hot favourite Oasis Dream in the Stanley Leisure Sprint Cup at Haydock.
Richard Hughes had the John Gosden-trained market leader (8-11) up with the pace throughout, but the writing was on the wall a furlong from home as he had to get serious on the brilliant July Cup and Nunthorpe Stakes winner.
Ted Durcan, on the other hand, was getting a real tune out of the eventual winner, who relished the rain-softened ground to come with a really strong run and grab the runner-up to win by one and a quarter lengths.
Airwave ran a fine race to be third, three-quarters of a length further away.
