Dimitrova heads Belmont field
Irish-trained filly Dimitrova, impressive winner of the American Oaks at Hollywood Park, heads a strong European challenge for the 250,000 Garden City Breeders’ Cup Handicap at Belmont tomorrow.
Dermot Weld’s filly, a daughter of Swain, has recorded three wins in four starts this year, including a two-length victory in the American Oaks last time.
Her only defeat this season was a third-place finish behind Yesterday in the Irish 1000 Guineas at the end of May.
“She’s done just about everything right,” exercise rider Joe Mulholland told www.thoroughbredtimes.com.
“The American Oaks was over at the top of the stretch. I thought she showed a lot considering she had been running over heavy ground in Europe and had never started beyond a mile.”
The Criquette Head-Maarek-trained Acago and Henri-Alex Pantall’s Campsie Fells also take their chances in the nine furlong event.
Francois Rohaut’s Baie also runs in the Grade One race.
Sand Springs, who finished second in the American Oaks, reopposes Dimitrova here while multiple Grade 1 winner Spoken Fur is entered in both this race and tonight’s Gazelle Handicap.
The field is completed by Ocean Drive, Andover Lady, Petionville Indeed, Indy Five Hundred and Sarie Marais.
