Saint Alebe claims Tote Ebor
Saint Alebe came with a powerful late run to land a thrilling renewal of the Tote Ebor at York.
The 20-1 winner came from last to first in the straight, catching Sun Bird (25-1) well inside the final furlong.
The heavily-backed 4-1 favourite Salsalino also finished fast for third with Unleash (25-1) fourth.
Putra Sandhurst cut out the early running chased by Unleash, last year's winner Hugs Dancer, Researched and Bourgeois, with Salsalino, Sentinel and Saint Alebe bringing up the rear.
Three furlongs out Contraband made rapid headway to go to the front, but he was quickly overtaken by Sun Bird, and the Scottish raider looked set for a famous victory.
But all the time Quinn was making headway on the wide outside and he produced the David Elsworth-trained four-year-old to challenge inside the final furlong.
Saint Alebe ran on strongly to gain the day by half a length. Salsalino weaved his way through the pack to claim third, with Unleash staying on again for fourth.
"Coming out of the stalls he just slipped and it automatically put me in a bad position," winning jockey Richard Quinn told Channel 4 attheraces.
