Scudamores start new training venture
Michael Scudamore is to team up with his eight-times champion jockey son Peter in a new training venture at the age of 70, it was revealed today.
Scudamore famously partnered Oxo to success in the 1959 Grand National and enjoyed success at the Cheltenham Festival as a trainer.
He gave up his training licence eight years ago but has reapplied to the Jockey Club and will be at the head of affairs in what will be a family venture.
Peter will take on the role of assistant trainer and his son, Tom, is expected to ride most of the runners.
“There are three of us here – myself, Peter and Marilyn (Peter’s wife) – but I’m holding the licence,” Michael told the Racing Post.
“I’ll be riding out and doing the gallops, things I’ve usually done, and giving advice. I’m looking forward to it.”
Peter Scudamore has yet to hold a licence in his own right but has acted as assistant to Nigel Twiston-Davies and Denis Caro.
He split from Caro earlier this week and said: “Denis and I have agreed to go our separate ways – things have not worked out as anticipated.
“It all came to a head only recently and my father is waiting for the licence to come through, so I don’t know when the first runners will be but we hope to have 20 or 25 horses. I may take over in the future – I’m looking forward to it being a family operation.”
