Balding delight at reaching Goodwood century
Rimrod gave Ian Balding, in his final season as a trainer before handing over to his son, Andrew, his 100th winner at Goodwood.
The two-year-old, ridden by Martin Dwyer, took the Listed Stardom Stakes by a length and a quarter from Rainwashed Gold. The winner went clear over a furlong out and ran on well.
Balding remembered saddling Selkirk to win the mile event back in 1990, who went on to take the Group 1 Sussex Stakes the following summer.
"It is marvellous than Rimrod was the one to clinch the century," he said.
"And although physically, he is nothing like Selkirk, who was big and gangly with a leg in each county, he is a two-year-old whom I have always liked enormously, and he worked well from day one."
Summing up his golden memories of Goodwood, Balding added: "We have enjoyed so many magical days down here. Grey Shot making all under a brilliant ride from Pat Eddery in the 1996 Goodwood Cup, Selkirk’s epic battle with Marling - I know we were pipped in a photo finish but it was a truly wonderful race - and of course Lochsong beating Paris House in the fog in the King George Stakes."
Balding was not the only one in ton up form. Mick Channon sent out his 100th winner of the season, which includes four victories abroad, when Joint Statement burst from the pack in the mile Harroways Stakes to beat Hawkley and Out For A Stroll by three lengths and a head.
The winner was partnered by "Frankie" McDonald, who was having his ninth success. The 20-year-old Irishman from Co Cavan, is based with David Arbuthnot and was replacing the injured Dean Corby.
