Scotty's takes over from Demonstrate at head of market
Scotty’s Future is the new favourite with the sponsors at 13-2 for the William Hill Mile at Goodwood tomorrow following the news that long-time market leader Demonstrate will miss the race.
The John Gosden-trained Demonstrate had been quoted at 11-2 by William Hill for the £100,000 handicap after finishing well clear of those racing on the unfavoured far side when seventh in the
Tote International Stakes at Ascot last Saturday.
But Gosden’s assistant George Foster announced: "Demonstrate will not run in the William Hill Mile tomorrow.
"The horse had a temperature at evening stables and the vet has just confirmed this and there will be a vet’s certificate lodged.
"It’s a shame because the ground had just come right."
A maximum field of 22 go to post with the Terry Mills-trained Wannabe Around heading the weights on 9st 10lb.
True Night a winner at Ascot last Sunday and at Goodwood on Tuesday has missed the cut but his handler David Nicholls, who is responsible for Scotty’s Future, also has two other runners Omaha City, the mount of Richard Quinn, and Mana-Mou Bay, who will be partnered by the trainer’s son Adrian.
Nicholls is full of hope that four-time course winner Omaha City can make a successful debut for him.
He is delighted that the gelding, who has joined him from Brian Gubby since running at Newmarket three weeks ago, has been drawn 22 of 22 in tomorrow’s race.
"He has a big chance with his high draw," the Thirsk trainer said.
"Brian Gubby asked me to train him and he is a lovely horse. It was a great training performance of Brian’s when he won here first time out this season after a year and a half off.
"Omaha City loves it here - like his trainer!"
Of his other two runners he said Scotty’s Future is "in great order" but he reckoned Mana-Mou Bay has "little chance" from stall two.
Scottish trainer Ian Semple is hopeful of a good run from failed hurdler Judicious despite the gelding’s poor draw.
A useful performer for Geoff Wragg, the five-year-old joined Charlie Mann last winter for a hurdling campaign but proved disappointing and was bought by Semple at the Doncaster sales.
"I bought him off Charlie Mann," Semple confirmed.
"He didn’t take to jumping. He was probably a bit free and didn’t stay.
"I honestly believe I could bring him back to six furlongs and win with this horse, he’s got tons of speed."
Judicious has been drawn towards the outside in stall four which is a concern for Semple.
He said: "It’s not what I wanted. Anywhere from 12 upwards would have been ideal. He’s probably a hold-up horse anyway but even so you can give lengths away out there."
Judicious scored at the first time of asking for his new trainer at Ayr recently and Carluke-based
Semple said:
"He won in spite of me last week. He won well and I’d done very little with him.
"One thing I have learned is that he doesn’t want galloping he’s better fresh so I’m hoping he’ll come on for the Ayr run."
Judicious will carry a 3lb penalty for that Ayr win but up-and-coming apprentice Ryan Moore will take a valuable 5lb off his back.
Semple added: " The horse has been down there since Tuesday morning. Young Ryan Moore came along and had a sit on him yesterday and gave him a canter up the track. He was happy with him.
"Everything is fine with him. We would just have preferred a better draw."
One-time leading fancies Heretic and Ghannam have not been declared for this Showcase handicap.
A spokeswoman for Heretic’s trainer, James Fanshawe, confirmed that the prevailing fast ground at
Goodwood has ruled the four-year-old out of the contest while Ghannam had always been considered doubtful after his hard race when finishing second in the Tote International.
