Urbina to mss last three days of Ascot

Jockey Oscar Urbina will miss the final three days of Royal Ascot after having his appeal against a suspension turned down.

The rider was banned after the stewards at Salisbury found him guilty of dropping his hands in the final furlong on Macadamia in the EBF Margadale Classified Stakes on June 11.

Macadamia finished sixth and at Monday’s appeal hearing the disciplinary committee heard evidence from Urbina, the filly’s trainer James Fanshawe and from a vet. They also viewed a video of the race.

After considering the evidence, the committee found Urbina to be in breach of Rule 156 in that he failed to ride out approaching the finish by dropping his hands and forfeited fifth place.

They did not consider Urbina’s explanation that the filly never travelled and struggled in the latter part of the race, to be borne out by the video footage.

The committee upheld the ban and Urbina is suspended from June 20 to June 22 inclusive, ruling him out of the final days of the Royal meeting.
