Injury-hit jockey Adrian Maguire faces further surgery later this week on a broken vertebra in his neck.

Maguire suffered the injury when he came off the Ferdy Murphy-trained Luzcadou seven from home in the Warwick National Crudwell Cup on Saturday.

He was taken to Warwick General Hospital immediately after the incident and underwent a scan on Saturday night.

His boss Murphy reported the bad news from Cheltenham.

‘‘They’ve done some more X-rays and he’s going to have another operation on Thursday,’’ he said. ‘‘They found further bone damage which they hadn’t seen before which has got to be sorted out.

‘‘He was not very happy when the surgeon told him the news, he has had some unbelievably bad luck and you’ve got to feel sorry for him.

‘‘At least he’ll be back next season and I’ll have to make sure we’ve got some good horses for him to ride to make up for the fact that he keeps missing out.’’

Maguire is currently missing his fourth Cheltenham Festival.

He sat out the 1995 renewal after his mother died, only to miss the meeting a year later after breaking a collar bone and a broken arm saw him on the sidelines in 1997.
