Racing: Ned Kelly will not oppose Istabraq
All eyes will be on Istabraq’s tilt at a historic four Champion Hurdle victories on Tuesday week March 12th when he faces the starter at the Mecca of National Hunt Racing, Cheltenham 2002.
Those who are tempted to wait for the day to back this incrediable horse (current odds 7/4) at a better price might be well advised to lump it on now as it is almost certain that one his main rivals, Ned Kelly will not run.
There has been much speculation in racing circles in recent weeks about this possiblity and of course a cloud hangs over Edward O’Grady’s yard anyway at the moment so some of his runners are unlikely to travel anyway.
It emerged at the Killarney Racegoers Cheltenham Preview night last Thursday that Ned Kelly would not be taking on Istabraq during discussion of the Champion Hurdle.
It also led to some heated debate with bookmaker Raymond Farrell offering ante post punters their money back in the event of Ned Kelly not running.
RTE’s Colm Murray was not happy at the fact that it was proposed not to run Ned Kelly but the ultimate decision rests with trainer Edward O’Grady and owner John Magnier.
The news that, Ned Kelly who is fourth favourite in the betting, may not run came to light when panelist and champion amateur Philip Fenton, was asked who did he think would win if Istabraq and Ned Kelly came over the last together, and Fenton replied that it would not happen as Ned Kelly would not be taking him on.
Rumour also has it that Norman Williamson was asking about the posibility of getting the ride on Lios A Paoraigh if it runs in the Champion instead of the Stayers Hurdle but if Charlie Swan does not ride it is understood that Ruby Walsh is on stand by for John Kielys charge.
The Champion Hurdle picture may become clearer later on the week with Istabraq very much on course to make history on Tuesday next.
