Horse Racing: Mighty Mast
Mizzen Mast set a new track record when powering to a convincing victory in the 400,000 dollar Strub Stakes at Santa Anita on Saturday.
The French import, owned by Prince Khaled Abdulla, strode four lengths clear of Giant Gentleman in the Grade Two contest on dirt to follow up his recent success in the Malibu Stakes.
The former Criquette Head-Maarek runner completed the nine furlongs in one minute 47.25 seconds, just bettering the previous best set by Silver Charm in 1998.
Trainer Bobby Frankel said: ‘‘Right now he doesn’t look like he has any distance limitations. It looks like he’s pretty much a push button horse which you can sit on and just let him finish.’’
Frankel added that the Santa Anita Handicap was Mizzen Mast’s next likely objective.
