Zawraq ruled out for rest of the season

Zawraq, once a leading contender for the Investec Derby until injury intervened, will not run again this season but should be campaigned in 2016.

The Dermot Weld-trained colt is reported to be recuperating well at Derrinstown Stud after he was forced to miss Epsom when he sustained a crack in his off-fore cannon bone.

The Sheikh Hamdan Al Maktoum-owned son of Shamardal is unbeaten in two starts, winning the Leopardstown 2,000 Guineas Trial on his seasonaldebut in April from Endless Drama, who went on to finish second to Gleneagles in the Irish 2,000 Guineas.

“He’s still at Derrinstown Stud recuperating. I saw him three weeks ago and he was just walking. He won’t get back this year,” said Sheikh Hamdan’s racing manager, Angus Gold. “He’s fine but after they found thecrack in a joint it’s going to be three months before he goes into training, so he will have missed this season.

“He’s too good a horse to rush back for not very much, so we’ll give him plenty of time and hopefully get him ready for next season.”

Mustajeeb is likely to have his first run since Royal Ascot in the Betfred Sprint Cup at Haydock on September 5. Weld has been waiting for theground to ease before pitching the four-year-old colt back on theracecourse after he found conditions too lively when fifth to Undrafted inthe Diamond Jubilee Stakes.

“As far as I know, Dermot is still hoping to get him to Haydock,” said Sheikh Hamdan’s racing manager, Angus Gold.

“After Ascot we felt he wanted a bit of ease in the ground to show his best, so we’ll just see what the next few days brings us and how he is, but Dermot was happy with him the last time I spoke to him. “Ascot was too quick for him. Dermot originally wanted to go to Deauville for the Maurice de Gheest and then when Sheikh Hamdan said he was going to let Muhaarar go there, Dermot said we’ll wait and have a look at Haydock.”
