Sandwich row leads to withdrawals in Australia

A row over a sandwich appears to have been the reason for a trainer in Australia withdrawing three of his horses at a meeting at Racing.com Park in Victoria.

Sandwich row leads to withdrawals in Australia

Bryce Stananway’s Entirely Perfect, Trinidadian and Travelling Wilbury were taken out following what www.racing.com reported was a row with a Pakenham Racing Club official after the trainer was said to have been denied a sandwich at the winners’ bar.

Stanaway had saddled two unplaced runners at the fixture.

Steward Taylor Wilson said: “Bryce requested that his last three horses for the day be scratched.

“There was an issue with the club, we’re led to believe, he’s put forward his side of what’s occurred – he was a bit disappointed with the way the club handled an issue that he had.

“We’ve yet to talk to the club in regards to that, but we will be doing that before the end of the day.

“At the end of the day, we acceded to his request and authorised the scratching of three horses.

“As far as we’re concerned, he wasn’t prepared to run his horses today and what the argument about is neither here nor there, we’re dealing with the racing of horses and not any catering issues that may or may not have occurred.”

Nutan gave trainer Peter Schiergen his fifth victory in the IDEE 146th Deutsches Derby with an emphatic success at Hamburg racecourse.

Jockey Andreas Starke kept the 9-2 shot to the far side while several of his rivals took the last turn very wide, losing many lengths.

Keeping a straight line, Nutan quickly set up a clear advantage and won unchallenged. Palace Prince was second with Fair Mountain third. The favourite Shimrano – who had Nutan back in third when winning at Cologne last month – was one of those that went wide and could never get into contention.

Michael Dods is confident a step up to six furlongs will hold no fears for Easton Angel in the Duchess of Cambridge Stakes at Newmarket on Friday. The juvenile ran a fantastic race to fill the runner-up spot behind imposing American raider Acapulco at Royal Ascot.

Dods said: “She’s in good form and the plan is to run, all being well.

“I think she’ll stay. She was running on well at the end of a stiff five furlongs at Ascot.

“You’d like to think (she’ll be hard to beat), but you never know in these races.

“There’s usually something there to beat you.”
