Well-supported Baden makes winning debut

The French-bred grey Baden (7/2 – 5/2) always took the eye in running well off the pace as Minella Suite and Smartplan took the 12 runners along.
The eventual winner still had in the region of nine horses in front of him at the third last with Minella Suite now well and truly cranking up the pace in front. O’Connor though refused to panic and he brought Baden through on the wide outside to overtake Minella Suite inside the final 50 yards to score by three parts of a length.
Castlelyons native O’Leary remarked of Baden, owned by his wife Vicky:”We bought this horse in France as a two-year-old and he has always been a grand sweet sort to work with. We expected him to run well here today.”
Donnchadh Doyle kept his handlers’ championship hopes alive by saddling the physically-imposing A Genie In Abottle (4/1) to make an impressive winning debut in the first instalment of this same contest.
A Genie In Abottle, a late-May foal that was bought for €36,000 at the 2014 Goffs Land Rover sale, was always well positioned under Barry O’Neill and he took command approaching the final fence to see-off favourite Black Ace by two and a half lengths.
Richie Kiely partnered his first points winner for owner/trainer Mag Mullins by returning to the coveted number one slot aboard newcomer Dundrum (5/1) in the five-year-old geldings’ maiden.
The Westerner-sired Dundrum, an own-brother to former Grade 1 Challow Novices’ Hurdle winner Backspin, led from the third last and he stayed on tenaciously in the closing stages to thwart the promising Egret by two and a half lengths. Dundrum should have little difficulty into developing into a track winner next season.
Michael Winters continued his fine season by sending out Native Lass (5/2) , representing absent New Ross-based owner Mark Walsh, to collect the five-year-old mares’ maiden.
