Down holds the Aces

Down Ace, having only her second run for Noel Meade, can win the Holycross Mares’ Chase at Thurles this afternoon.

Down holds the Aces

The seven-year-old is making her debut over fences, but is the winner of a point-to-point at Ballinboola in Co Wexford.

Her initial outing for Meade came in a mares’ hurdle at Gowran Park 20 days ago, when beaten no less than forty-one and three quarter lengths into fourth place behind Little King Robin.

The selection performed far better than the bare result would suggest, however, paying the price in the closing stages for attempting to close down that brilliant front-runner.

Down Ace, who won five races in a row in England when trained by Fergal O’Brien, is now fancied to build on that effort.

Dessie Hughes’ Tiger Trek is clearly no star, but may be good enough to get through the Cashel Maiden hurdle, having been mugged late on by Grandma Dotty at Gowran Park.

His most interesting rival has to be Ballyfair, a promising fourth to the well regarded Emerging Talent in a hot bumper at Naas in March. Hughes can complete a double with the mildly frustrating Sub Lieutenant in the Bumper.
