Injured Missunited retired after Goodwood win

Hollywood superstar Tom Cruise had added more than a touch of glamour when appearing to present the prize for the Magnolia Cup charity race but trainer Mick Winters brought something entirely different to the occasion at Glorious Goodwood yesterday.

Injured Missunited retired after Goodwood win

The Cork trainer, dressed in sandals and a Panama hat, is usually at the Galway this week, where his wonderful mare Missunited had won last year’s Galway Hurdle before turning her attentions to the Flat.

Missunited (3-1 favourite) had been given an outstanding ride from Jim Crowley to finish third in the Gold Cup and was just as tenacious in holding off all-comers in the Sterling Insurance Lillie Langtry Stakes.

Unfortunately, as soon as she had beaten Arabian Comet by half a length, she was dismounted on the racecourse and it emerged later she had picked up a career-ending injury to a suspensory ligament in a leg.

Winters said: “I’d say that could be her finale now, we’ve seen the best from her.

“If you had a choice to finish up here, I think you’d pick it.

“She ran her heart out all the way to the line. It’s fabulous and I suppose she’s a horse of a lifetime.

“She is known by everyone in the National Hunt scene and now she’s done it on the Flat as well.

“I’m not looking forward to putting her in foal, but her owners probably are.”

Crowley got a two-day whip ban (August 14-15), while the runner-up is likely to be sent to the Galtres Stakes at York by trainer William Haggas. />
