Former champion apprentice Ronan Whelan, from nearby Monastervin, captured the Deal Done Apprentice Derby for the first time when producing 20/1 shot News At Six in the final furlong to foil market-leaders Karezak and Captain Teemo.

Bolger quipped: “That’s my third Derby this year — it must be a record,” referring to his victories in the Cork Derby (Chance To Dance), the Magners Ulster Derby (Wexford Town) and now the Apprentice Derby.
