Amateur Derby glee for Mullins at Epsom

Champion Irish amateur Patrick Mullins made a successful trip to Epsom to take the Amateur Derby on Beacon Lady.

Amateur Derby glee for Mullins at Epsom

The record-breaking rider, son of top Irish jumps trainer Willie Mullins, booked himself for the mount on the William Knight-trained four-year-old.

Although this was Beacon Lady’s first visit to Epsom she had winning form at Brighton, which is a similar track, and had no problems handling the undulations.

Mullins had the 3-1 chance at the rear of the field for most of the mile-and-a-half contest before bringing her with a telling surge to challenge the favourite Azrag and go on to win by a length and a quarter.

“We were really pleased, delighted and Patrick actually rang up for the ride, so it was all straightforward really,” said Knight.

“He gave her a nice ride. He dropped her out nicely, filled her up with confidence and came with one nice, long run. She did it quite easily in the end.

“The reason we came to Epsom was because she has done so well at Brighton and we wanted to keep things as simple as we could.”
