Vintage Carberry gets new NH season off to a flier with a 927/1 four-timer

Racegoers were treated to a display of vintage Paul Carberry on the opening day of the new jumps season in Ballirnobe last night as former champion Paul Carberry completed a magnificent 927/1 four-timer on Six Stone Ned, Fairymount Lord, Turnonthegas and Corskeagh Royale, his first and last winner trained by Noel Meade.

Patient on all three winners, Carberry produced the Six Stone Ned, unable to win a bumper in five attempts, to lead approaching the final flight before beating favourite Passage Vendome, which fluffed the last, by two and a half lengths.

A delighted Meade declared: “I’m the leading trainer for the season,” before explaining: “This horse was unlucky a couple of times in bumpers, in the north when he didn’t get a run and, in Thurles, when he was trying to give lumps of weight to a four-year-old.
