The starting of races in Ireland, which has long been a bone of contention, reached farcical proportions for the opening Maiden Hurdle at Tramore yesterday.

Champion trainer Willie Mullins, currently in France pursuing potential stars of the future, dominated last night’s action in Punchestown, completing a treble with Raptor, Letherbelucky and Passage Vendome.

Racegoers were treated to a display of vintage Paul Carberry on the opening day of the new jumps season in Ballirnobe last night as former champion Paul Carberry completed a magnificent 927/1 four-timer on Six Stone Ned, Fairymount Lord, Turnonthegas and Corskeagh Royale, his first and last winner trained by Noel Meade.
