Owner Clive Smith praised Paul Nicholls and his team for their efforts in getting Kauto Star back on track to bid for a third success in the Betfred Cheltenham Gold Cup on Friday.

The 12-year-old confirmed his place in the blue riband event after delighting connections in an “awesome” schooling session at trainer Nicholls’ Ditcheat base.

Smith said: “We were very pleased with him this morning. He went very well, jumped the fences beautifully and it’s all systems go.
