Hurricane in flying form
Brilliant winner of the Champion Hurdle last March, the eight-year-old has yet to make his debut this season and been the medium of much speculation over a number of weeks.
“Everything went very well,” said trainer Willie Mullins.
“It was more than a little workout, it was a good piece of work. He went a mile and five furlongs on the flat with three of his stable companions. He did the same as he would at that pre-Cheltenham workout at Leopardstown and they started in front of the stands.
“Emmet and Paul (Townend) ride him in all his homework, but I’ve given Paul a few days off this week.
“The plan was to drop in and then ask him to race turning for home. Emmet said he gave him a squeeze and he just took off.
“It was his best bit of work so far and, I’d imagine, the aim now will be the Irish Champion Hurdle at Leopardstown (January 29).”
Hurricane Fly was due to return in the Istabraq Festival Hurdle at Leopardstown eight days ago, but the Carlow handler decided to give him more time.
It inevitably led to questions, regarding the horse’s well-being, but Mullins was adamant all was well and that Hurricane Fly would not be seen until fit and ready to do himself justice. All the indications now are that the son of Montjeu is on target to retain his Champion Hurdle crown in March.
Hurricane Fly was last night a top-priced 5-2 for Cheltenham with Stan James and Blue Square. Paddy Power were offering 9-4, but he was only a 2-1 shot with both Boylesports and Ladbrokes.
