Going gets tough for Nails

MICHAEL Mulvany is hoping for rain ahead of Sunday’s Keeneland Phoenix Stakes at the Curragh so as to inconvenience some of Tough As Nails’ rivals.

The Dark Angel juvenile is enjoying a fine campaign, having eased clear in a Tipperary maiden before chasing home Power and Lilbourne Lad in two races at the Curragh.

He faces another tough test this weekend, with his two conquerors set to reoppose.

Tough As Nails is also likely to be joined in the line-up by the smart Frederick Engels, but Mulvany is still hopeful his charge will give another good account.

“The horse is in super form and we’d be hoping we get a drop of rain, as that would be more in our favour than some of the others,” the County Meath handler told At The Races.

“There is rain forecast, and I know my lad goes with give in the ground, although he’ll handle good to firm, too.

“He looks to be getting stronger and he has grown a little bit.

“He’s a horse who doesn’t show you a whole lot at home, but he does it when he goes racing.

“At home he’s like a three-mile chaser – he just lobs around the place.”
