Sense Of Purpose a possible for Melbourne

SENSE Of Purpose set up a possible crack at the Melbourne Cup with victory in the Challenge Stakes at Leopardstown on Thursday evening.

Sense Of Purpose a possible for Melbourne

The four-year-old filly was extending Weld’s superb record in the Listed race, which he has now won for the past four years.

Weld is no stranger in Australia, having already twice won the big race with Vintage Crop and Media Puzzle.

“This (Challenge Stakes) is a lucky race for us. We have won it six times in the last 10 years. We have won it four in a row now,” said Weld.

“Profound Beauty and Vinnie Roe won it three times each so she had a hard act to follow.

“She got a very good ride (from Pat Smullen). She is a very genuine filly who has improved as the years have gone on.

“She ran an excellent race on her last race (second to Banimpire in the Noblesse Stakes at Cork). I thought that run would be good enough to win today.

“We’ll see where we go. The Park Hill (at Doncaster) is the logical step.

“She’ll get an entry for the Melbourne Cup. I’m not saying she will go but she will get an entry. She stays well. Ground wise, she’s adaptable, but firm would be best.”
