Impressive Dundrum blows away Tornedo

DUNDRUM surprised hot-pot Tornedo Shay to the tune of eight lengths in the Killarney Veterinary Clinic Race at the Kerry track last night.

Impressive Dundrum blows away Tornedo

Tornedo Shay was all the rage in the market, 8-11 to 1-2, but could never get in a blow at the impressive winner.

Trained by Jessica Harrington and partnered by her daughter, Kate, Dundrum went on with over two furlongs to run. Tornedo Shay, soon in hot pursuit, was always fighting a losing battle.

Said Harrington senior: “I’m delighted, I didn’t think he would beat Tornedo Shay. The Galway Plate will be next, he has 9-10 and, I presume, will get into the race.”

Shiramiyna, heavily backed when proving no match for Teofilo’s sister, Teo’s Sister, at Leopardstown last week, made no mistake in the Irish Stallion Farms’ EBF Fillies Maiden.

She had a good draw in two and Johnny Murtagh made full use of it. He sent the daughter of Invincible Spirit straight into the lead and didn’t have to overly hard on her to beat Ondeafears by a length and a quarter.

Murtagh completed a double aboard Ken Condon’s Coprah in the Easy Clean Ltd Race, with his tactics probably playing a big part in the final outcome.

The front-running Mawaakef stayed over on the far rail, with Murtagh coming up the stands’ side. The principals raced wide apart, but at the line it was Coprah who was comfortably a length and three parts to the good.

Commented Condon: “He has a nice bit of ability and had the best of the ground in the straight.

“We were a little worried about the trip (a mile plus), coming here from a Curragh maiden over six furlongs.”

David Wachman’s Giant Step went off a well-backed favourite, but supporters got no run for their money.

He went right on leaving the stalls, hit the rail, losing considerable ground was quickly pulled up by Billy Lee.

John Murphy continued his excellent record at the track when saddling the first two, Goldplated and Summer Glow respectively, in the Corcorans’ Furniture And Carpets Handicap.

Goldplated powered to the front at the two furlong pole for Kevin Manning to beat her stable companion by two and a half lengths, after Summer Glow had enjoyed far from a clear run on the final turn.

Said Murphy: “She (Goldplated) is progressive. We were a little worried about the ground and thought it would be a lot quicker.”

Ruby Walsh struck for the first time this week when giving the heavily-backed Henry de Bromhead-trained Fort George a dashing drive to land the Christy McSweeney Memorial Novice Chase.

Fort George made most of the running, jumped beautifully and carried far too many guns for market leader Sweeps Hill in the closing stages.

De Bromhead wasn’t at the meeting, but Walsh remarked: “He was good and bounces off fast ground.”

The Mike Cronin Readymix Ltd Handicap Chase saw Thomond O’Mara’s Eagle’s Pass do the business for the first time in over two years,

He fought it out over the last three fences with Eagle’s Pass, asserting his superiority, under Barry Geraghty, on the flat.

“He will go to Galway for either the Hurdle or another handicap chase,” reported O’Mara.

Jewel In the Sun went off at what looked a tight price in the Race Club At The Malton Handicap Hurdle and was beaten with a circuit to cover. He was soon pulled up.

Victory went to Fair Dilemma, who on stayed on strongly to complete a double for Geraghty.

It was trainer Val O’Brien’s first success for ten months.
