Full steam ahead for Frankel backers in Sussex

FRANKEL is a shade of odds-on for his eagerly-anticipated Qipco Sussex Stakes clash with Canford Cliffs following Dream Ahead’s victory in the Darley July Cup.

Henry Cecil’s brilliant colt has inflicted the only two defeats suffered by Dream Ahead, and Frankel is now 4-5 to maintain his 100% record when he faces older horses for the first time at Glorious Goodwood on July 27.

Such is the racecourse reputation of Frankel that he heads the market ahead of the superb mile specialist Canford Cliffs.

Richard Hannon’s four-year-old, winner of the Sussex last summer, is 11-8 second best despite flooring the highly-talented French mare Goldikova in the Queen Anne Stakes at Royal Ascot.

“Dream Ahead’s win in the July Cup was just the latest performance to boost Frankel’s form, and as far as we’re concerned, Sir Henry Cecil’s charge will be the one to beat if the ’Duel on the Downs’ takes place as all racing fans hope it will,” said Coral’s David Stevens.

Speaking at Salisbury on Saturday night, Hannon told Racing UK: “He’s going well, he’s working great and we’re looking forward to Goodwood.

“Of course you worry about Frankel, he’s a good horse.

“It will be a good race and it would be nice to beat him. I think we can, I wouldn’t be going there if I thought we couldn’t beat him.”

Qipco Sussex Stakes, Coral bet: 4-5 Frankel, 11-8 Canford Cliffs, 8-1 Zoffany, 12-1 Dick Turpin, 14-1 Rajsaman, 20-1 Bar
