Weld seeking Famous victory

DERMOT Weld has his fingers crossed that Famous Name will finally secure an elusive Group One win this season.

The Khalid Abdullah owned six-year-old has won 10 of his 21 starts but has so far been frustrated at the highest level.

He has, however, finished second in three Group Ones, including the French Derby in 2008.

Famous Name will start his season off this weekend in the Heritage Stakes at Leopardstown, a race he won last year.

“He’s well and the plan is to run at Leopardstown,” said Weld.

“He’s a joy to train and such a good horse. He has been very rewarding for his owner and all his connections.

“Hopefully he can do it (win a Group One). That’s the plan.”

Also likely to be in action on the card is Aidan O’Brien’s Derby hope Recital in the P.W.McGrath Memorial Ballysax Stakes.

O’Brien has dominated the contest down the years with the likes of Galileo, High Chaparral, Yeats and Fame And Glory all on the roll of honour.

Recital won a Group One in France on just his second start last season.

There are five other entries from Ballydoyle among the 13 with John Oxx’s Adilapour and Dermot Weld’s Rich Tapestry also engaged.

meanwhile Marcus Tregoning has high hopes for Yaseer throughout the summer.

The three-year-old will have his first run of the season in the Feilden Stakes at Newmarket on April 13, after which a campaign will be mapped out.

He finished second to Sir Michael Stoute’s Derby hope Carlton House on his debut before having no trouble opening his account at Kempton in December.

Tregoning will be hoping to have better luck in the Classics this term having sold last year’s 2000 Guineas winner Makfi out of his yard before he had even run.

“He’s in really good form and we’re very pleased with him, but he’s a late May foal so we’ll have to bear that in mind,” said Tregoning.

“He’s going to Newmarket for the Feilden Stakes and even if he wins, we need to remember he’s a May foal so he might need time between his races – I don’t know.”
