Dr Doocey digs deep
Dr Doocey (5/1), a creditable ninth behind Whyso Mayo in a Thurles hunters chase just five days earlier, valiantly tried to make all the running in this 14-runner contest. Whilst headed briefly by Doc O’Donnell at the final fence, the victorious ten-year-old dug deep in the closing stages to fend off the staying-on Jamadiel by two lengths.
James Spillane’s elder brother Dinny got on the scoresheet when teaming up with octogenarian Coolcormack-based owner/trainer Michael Ronayne to collect the confined hunt maiden with Carriglea Wood (6/1).
On what was his sixth career start, Carriglea Wood gave an exhibition of fencing in front and he threw the faster jump at the final of the 15 obstacles when being challenged by odds-on shot Howareyougoingon. The latter had no more to offer inside the final 100 yards as Carriglea Wood, whom 81-year-old Ronayne rides out every day, asserted to score by a length.
Robert Tyner continued his stellar season by sending out three winners, his hat-trick being completed by Exitnell (9/4) in the first division of the six-year-old and upwards mares’ maiden. Exitnell was partnered by Tyner’s teenage son Jack, who was unfortunately removed to hospital in an unconscious state following a first fence fall from Dusmagic in the second split of the same contest.
