Lynam - Prix de l’Abbaye is Power’s sole autumn target
With his only two previous visits to the winner’s enclosure coming on the all-weather at Dundalk, Edward Lynam’s gelding was sent off at 100-1 on the Knavesmire, but he belied his huge odds with a stylish victory.
A trip to France could be next on the three-year-old’s agenda, but Lynam would not be concerned if his pride and joy does not see the racecourse again this season.
“Sole Power has come out of the race brilliant and it’s as if he’d been out for a dance! He’s in great form and very well,” said Lynam.
“The Prix de l’Abbaye at Longchamp is the only target for him and that’s if they get a bit of good ground.
“If it comes up soft, he won’t run and we’ll wait until next year with his long-term future in mind.
“I would categorically rule him out of this year’s Hong Kong Sprint and the Breeders’ Cup Sprint and races like that because he is still only a three-year-old.
“But I’d be thinking of those sort of races definitely the following year as well as Dubai at some point.”
While many might have had Sole Power’s triumph down as a flash in the pan, Lynam is adamant that his charge, owner by Sabena Power, mother of bookmaker Paddy Power, was just the best horse on the day.
“I could argue that it was a fluke if the ground had been soft or bottomless or he stole a soft five-length lead and the other jockeys let him get away while they were asleep,” the trainer added.
“But no, it was unexpected yes, fluke no and the best horse won the race. He won on merit and I’ve never seen a flukey winner score in a fast time.
“It was absolutely brilliant and he is a great horse owned by great people.”
