Ground sinks Benbaun’s Curragh raid

THE prospect of heavy ground has scuppered plans for Benbaun’s attempt a fourth win in the Grenzen Flying Five Stakes at the Curragh on Sunday.

The ultra-consistent sprinter has captured this Group Three dash three times - in 2005, 2006 and 2007 – and has won seven times in all at the County Kildare track.

Kevin Ryan’s ace is now likely to go straight for the Prix de l’Abbaye at Longchamp in October, which he won in 2007 when trained by the Thirsk trainer’s friend Mark Wallace, who emigrated to Australia at the end of last year.

Benbaun showed he was as good as ever when only going down by a neck to Borderlescott in the Coolmore Nunthorpe Stakes at York last week.

Meanwhile, Allied Powers is a possible for the Listed Ardilaun Hotel Oyster Stakes at Galway on Monday.

Michael Bell’s four-year-old, who went up 30lb in the handicap last season, may go to Ireland due to his liking for soft conditions.

Bell had considered the Grand Prix de Deauville this weekend for the Braveheart Stakes winner, but drying ground in France has ruled him out of the Group Two event.

The Newmarket handler said: “Allied Powers looks in good form and he has missed a race in Deauville on Sunday due to the drying ground.

“He could now head to Galway on Monday, where hopefully the wet weather they have been having in Ireland should be more to his liking.”

lTipperary’s abandoned meeting on Thursday has been rescheduled to take place on Wednesday, September 9.

The first race will be 4.25pm.
