Captain can take charge

GLENFINN Captain is fancied to cause a mild surprise by beating Snowy Morning in the Grade 2 Clonmel Oil Chase at Clonmel this afternoon.

In theory, Snowy Morning should be the proverbial good thing. For instance, at the weights, he has 15lbs in hand of the selection and has plenty in reserve over the rest of the field as well.

Willie Mullins’ charge is a high-class eight-year-old, as evidenced by some cracking efforts last season. He rounded off the campaign by finishing second behind Neptune Collonges at Punchestown and was third in both the Aintree Grand National and the Hennessy Cognac Gold Cup at Leopardstown.

Many of Mullins’ inmates, however, are needing a run and this fellow missed taking on Kauto Star at Down Royal after reportedly working badly on the lead-in to the contest.

In contrast, Glenfinn Captain should arrive at the top of his game, having come back to his best on this track last month.

He may not have had a great deal to beat, but was impressive in scampering to a 13 lengths success over Justpourit and if he is ever going to beat Snowy Morning it will surely be today!

Mullins’ seasonal debutante, Pomme Tiepy, gets the nap to land the Listed EBF T.A Morris Memorial Mares Chase.

She got better and better as last season progressed, scoring first time out to boot, and this tough sort is well capable of shrugging off top weight.

Ruby Walsh teams up with Pomme Tiepy and is a significant booking for Chelsea Harbour in the Clonmel Oil Service Station Handicap Hurdle.

He was a bit disappoinitng when only sixth behind Kirybroguelantern at Naas, but stepping up half a mile in trip and weaker opposition make him the one to beat.
