Turfed out: Curragh work postponed

THE Turf Club announced it had postponed its redevelopment of Curragh Racecourse blaming the “current unprecedented economic conditions”.

The project, budgeted to cost approximately €100 million, is to be financed by grant aid from Horse Racing Ireland, industry donations, bank borrowings and the Turf Club’s own resources.

Phase one of the project has been completed and the second and main phase was scheduled to begin in July 2009.

However, Nick Wachman, senior steward of the Turf Club, said it had decided to postpone that phase, following consultation with the Turf Club’s professional advisers and also with a number of senior people in the racing industry.

He said, however, the project remained a priority for the Turf Club.
