Nickname retired to stud

Martin Brassil’s smart chaser Nickname has been retired to stud in France after winning nine races for the Co Kildare handler.

Nickname retired to stud

The nine-year-old arrived from France in 2005 and went on to win eight races in Graded company over fences, including when giving his trainer a first Grade One success in the Paddy Power Dial-A-Bet Chase at Leopardstown in 2006.

Brassil admits he will be sadly missed. He said: “It was great to have a horse as good as him and he gave me my first Grade One which was great.

“He was perfectly sound and I was preparing him for another season, but the owners decided because he was nine rising 10 that it was the right time to go to stud with him.

“You don’t see many entires jumping over here but in France they often have horses going from jumping to stud and it is not really frowned upon like it is here.

“You wouldn’t expect him to have a lot of business either in Ireland or England, but in France, the breeders seem to like those kind of horses.”

New date for Gowran meeting Horse Racing Ireland has announced there will be a fixture at Gowran Park on Friday, October 31 to replace the meeting which was cancelled yesterday due to the inclement weather. Entries for the meeting will close on Monday.
