Russell’s prospects of making Galway look bleak

DAVY Russell’s prospects of riding at the Galway Festival look bleak after the leading rider was involved in a nasty incident at Ballinrobe on Tuesday evening.

Russell’s prospects of making Galway look bleak

Russell was riding Always Fruitful in the J.J Burke Subaru Maiden Hurdle when he was brought down at the third last by Passcini, ridden by Andrew Lynch, who was also in the wars.

“It’s the wrist he had all the problems with last year,” said Russell’s agent Andrew Kelly.

“He’s gone for a consultation this morning and he’s not exactly sure of the extent but he’ll be out for a few days definitely, at least a week or so.

“He’s just not sure if it’s a break or not and if it is, he’ll go and get it operated on. If not, all the better, but it doesn’t look good.

“At the minute Galway is on hold but nothing is set in stone but he said himself it doesn’t look good.”

The news is even worse for young jockey Lynch, who only recently returned after breaking his arm.

“I spoke briefly to his father this morning and it looks like he has broken his jaw in two places and his nose. He has a fracture to his upper arm and he may have broken bones in his wrist or hand,” said his agent John Shortt.

“It was a very bad fall and he’s been very unlucky, he’s only been back five weeks after breaking his arm so it’s dreadful the week before Galway.

“You couldn’t put a figure on how long he’d be out. They moved him to Galway last night and he’s in the hands of the surgeons now.”
