Weld in no hurry to make a decision on supplementing Casual Conquest for Epsom Derby

DERMOT Weld has reiterated that no decision regarding Casual Conquest’s participation in the Vodafone Derby will be made in the immediate future.

Weld in no hurry to make a decision on supplementing Casual Conquest for Epsom Derby

The Hernando colt is the general 7-2 market-leader for the June 7 contest after trouncing his rivals in the Derrinstown Stud Derby Trial earlier in the month.

However, he will need to be supplemented at a cost of £75,000 if he is to line up at Epsom and connections are keen to bide their time.

Weld said: “I won’t make a decision at the moment as there is no pressure to make a decision, we’re not entered in the race.

“In my opinion the entry system is wrong. It’s not to do with the supplementing but with the entry stages and the payments.

“We’ll wait and see how he works next week. There’s no urgency, there’s no rush.

“He’s in the French Derby and he’s a big horse, he’s 16.3 hands and he’s only run twice. We’ll review everything and see how he is next week.”

Weld will also wait before making a decision as to whether his exciting filly Chinese White heads to Epsom for a crack at the Juddmonte Oaks.

Unlike her stablemate, the daughter of Dalakhani is entered in the Classic but also has alternative options and was initially described as an unlikely runner.

“Again, there is no definite decision with her and all I said was that she was unlikely to go,” Weld told At The Races.

“She works next week and then we’ll make a call.”

Meanwhile Myboycharlie is on course to make his seasonal debut in the Weatherbys Ireland Greenlands Stakes at the Curragh on Saturday.

The Tommy Stack-trained colt was a classy two-year-old, beating subsequent 1000 Guineas winner Natagora in the Prix Morny for his third success before ending the campaign by finishing third to New Approach in the National Stakes on his first attempt over seven furlongs.

The son of Danetime reverts to six furlongs at the weekend with connections eyeing the Golden Jubilee Stakes at Royal Ascot as his Group One target next month.

“He’s in good shape, he’s done well over the winter and we’re happy with him,” said Stack’s son Fozzy.

“You don’t have much choice with three-year-old sprinters taking on older horses. It won’t be a bad race, I think Jeremy Noseda’s horse (Soldier’s Tale) is coming over.

“There’s some rain forecast today and tomorrow. We’ll see how much we get. He’s won on soft ground, but he just wants nice ground and we’re not too worried.

“All being well he’ll probably go for the Golden Jubilee after that.”

Myboycharlie is generally available at 20-1 for the Golden Jubilee at Royal Ascot on June 21.

Contest made a very encouraging return to action when scoring in Listed company at Cork at the start of the month. Despite being pleased with that performance, trainer David Wachman is likely to bypass the Greenlands in favour of a drop back to the minimum trip.

“I don’t think we’ll run him as I think I’ll wait for the following Monday week when there’s a Listed race over five furlongs at Naas,” Wachman said.

“He’ll have to improve a bit to warrant running in the July Cup but he’s entitled to get the entry in it,” he told At The Races. “He seemed to win quite well last time but we’ll see how he runs at Naas and take things from there.”

* Sandown became Wednesday’s second casualty of unsafe ground as their evening meeting was abandoned after three races. Jockeys expressed unease at the slippery nature of the bend turning for home, after which an inspection was staged. Despite sand placed on the affected area, the decision was taken to abandon. Ayr’s meeting yesterday afternoon was also called off due to false ground.
