Migmatite can make it third time lucky
John Kiely’s four-year-old didn’t appear to quite see out two miles on his debut when third to Your Sum Man in a Tipperary bumper.
He was then dropped down to a mile and six at Leopardstown and it seemed a case of finding that journey a trifle too far as well.
The selection ran a cracking good race all the same, only giving best to Impudent inside the furlong pole.
In the end he was beaten four and a half lengths, but Impudent is a smart and versatile sort, who has since scored over flights at Bellewstown.
Migmatite now tackles a mile and a quarter and, as a son of Giant’s Causeway, that may well prove ideal at the moment.
Athlumney Lad, seventh on the flat behind Sandymount Earl at the Curragh last time, will surely start favourite in the Tote Telebet 1850238669 Hurdle!
But he’s not to be overly trusted and preference is for long-absent Barrow Drive, who hasn’t been seen since pulling up in a chase at Cheltenham back in November.
Prior to that Barrow Drive was a creditable third to Strong Project and Wild Passion over hurdles at Thurles and has shown an ability to go well fresh in the past.
The frustrating Ferry Point, runner-up in all three of her races so far, may have found her level in the Mares Bumper.
Nina Carberry made a lot of use of the five-year-old at Bellewstown five days ago, she was clear six furlongs out, but Ferry Point died in the closing stages and was eventually no match for Willie Mullins’ newcomer, Graces Choice. Perhaps more restraint will be exercised on this occasion.
