On You Go coasts home as O’Sullivan gets off mark for JP

ON YOU GO, the first horse Eugene O’Sullivan has had for J P McManus, gave the trainer his first winner at Tipperary when landing the John Harney Bookmaker Handicap Chase last night.

Confidently handled by David Casey, the six-year-old eased ahead going to three out and was soon striding clear.

Casey was able to take it relatively easy in the closing stages and On You Go still went by the line eight lengths in front of Real Overdrive.

“It’s nice to get one for J P and he will keep tipping away for the summer”, remarked O’Sullivan.

“It has taken him a long time to get going, possibly he wants this ground. We will find another race in about three weeks time.”

Ballydoyle’s The Bogberry was always odds-on to take the Irish Stallion Farms’ EBF Race, but gave supporters a real fright under Kieren Fallon.

He had it all to do early in the straight, in behind horses, as Rainbow Crossing made the best of her way home.

But Fallon conjured a terrific late surge from the Hawk Wing colt, who was actually a cosy neck in front at the line.

“It is great to have Kieren back, he hasn’t lost it”, smiled Aidan O Brien. “This is a smart colt and he will go for the Chesham at Ascot now.”

The John Oxx-trained Katirisa proved a costly failure in the Tallis and Co Construction Maiden.

The odds-on favourite had beaten Many Colours when the pair met at Naas previously, but could never get in a blow at her rival on this occasion.

Kevin Manning kicked away on Many Colours with less than two furlongs to go, crossing the line comfortably two and a half lengths to the good.

Pat Carey’s Fly By Magic showed speed throughout to win the five furlongs Knockanglass Stables Handicap.

Well handled by Shane Gorey, the filly got the best of a real tussle with Lilly Be, scoring by a short head.

Commented Carey: “She’s nice and fast and deserved to win a race. Maidens are scarce, so I just decided to chance her in this.”

Whataboutya, 8-11 to 8-13, gave punters some scary moments on his way to winning the Xpress Stop Beginners Chase.

He was very lucky to escape a bad error at the ninth and got low at several other obstacles as well.

Denis O’Regan allowed him stride on heading to the third last and it was largely plain sailing from that point.

Steve Mahon’s Wicker Park was backed from 4-1 to 5-2 market-leader in the Bumper and made most of the running.

He had nothing left inside the furlong pole, however, as Colm Murphy’s newcomer Fleeting Chance and Ross O’Sullivan quickened past.

Said Murphy: “He hops off that ground and will now go for a winners’ race. He jumps really well.”

Islandbane, who goes up 11lbs in the future, shrugged off a mandatory 5lbs penalty in the Tipperary Summer Festival Handicap.

Impressive at Listowel a couple of days earlier, she again made most of the running, staying on strongly for Pat Shanahan to score by a length and a quarter.
