Downtown on the up and up

DOWNTOWN is fancied to continue Wayne Lordan’s terrific start to the season by landing the Irish Stallion Farms’ EBF Fillies Maiden at Clonmel this evening.

The selection is bred to win a classic, by Danehill out of User Friendly, but showed little or nothing in one outing as juvenile, trailing home 11th of 15 behind Kissinthemoonlight at Roscommon in August.

She clearly did well over the winter, however, and looked an altogether different proposition on her reappearance at Cork earlier in the month.

Light in the market, Downtown finished a creditable length second to Dermot Weld’s well-regarded newcomer, Fancy Dance.

The form is working out quite nicely, with third placed Alexander Goldmine scoring at Roscommon on Monday.

Two moderate horses who have a history of failure, Stealing Moments and Prince Massini, are the ones to concentrate on in the Cashel Maiden Hurdle.

The former returned from a long break to take fifth in the handicap won by Keys Pride at Punchestown, while Prince Massini too was coming back following an absence when runner-up behind Andsosayallofus at Down Royal.

Stealing Moments is the choice.

Cousteau, formerly a more than useful sort on the level for Peter Chapple-Hyam, could be ready to strike for the first time over jumps in the Powerstown Handicap Hurdle.

He was the medium of a morning-price gamble on this track two weeks ago, but didn’t enjoy the best of luck in running when sixth to Joys Island.

On that same evening, Islandbane made all to score over ten furlongs and could shrug off a 5lbs rise in the weights in the Knockmealdown Handicap.
