Lester ‘improving’ after healthscare
Former commentator O’Sullevan has been a firm ally of the legendary jockey for over 50 years and was due to accompany him at Newmarket on Saturday for the inaugural ’Lester Piggott Day’.
However, a decision was taken on Wednesday to postpone the event and instead stage it in the autumn, when Piggott will hopefully be well enough to attend.
The 71-year-old is still in intensive care in a hospital in Lausanne, Switzerland.
“He’s improving and the anxiety has certainly lessened. I think all is pointing to a good recovery,” said O’Sullevan.
“I think Maureen (Haggas, Piggott’s daughter) is back by now and Lester is coming back in an air ambulance after the weekend.”
The 11-times champion was suffering problems with his health a few months ago and was first admitted to West Suffolk Hospital in Bury St Edmunds after feeling unwell on Christmas Eve on his return from a trip to Hong Kong.
He was released five days later.
