Smullen at the double

PAT SMULLEN enjoyed his trip to Ballinrobe last night, notching a double on Piltown and Reside.

Smullen at the double

Smullen was seen at his enterprising best on board the consistent but previously luckless Piltown, trained by his father-in-law Joe Crowley, in the Andy & Judy O'Rourke Memorial Handicap.

Smullen quickly got the 11/4 favourite over from an unfavourably low draw and, soon in front, he dictated the pace on John Mangan's son of Namid, placed in five of his six starts this season and runner-up in his last two.

In command turning for home, Piltown kept going well to beat Ribald and is likely to reappear at Galway on Monday before going hurdling.

The Dermot Weld trained Reside, carrying the famous green and white colours of Bert Firestone provided Smullen with the second leg of the double, justifying odds-on favouritism in the AIB Westport Maiden.

Having her fourth outing, the daughter of Montjeu tracked the leaders throughout before Smullen asked her to quicken past Creekhaven approaching the home-turn.

Soon in command, Reside quickly stretched clear to record an emphatic, six lengths win, earning an invaluable bracket.

Earlier, Smullen had to settle for the runner-up berth on the well-backed, Paul Magnier-trained Lilly Be, which went for home before the straight in the Paddy Smyth Memorial handicap.

However he was mastered inside the final furlong by top-weight Segoria, trained by Edgar Byrne and ridden by 7lb. claimer Mark Lane.

The winner is in foal to Mull Of Kintyre and is likely to have her final race, under a mandatory penalty, at Naas tomorrow night.
