Sweet Afton can confirm promise

SWEET AFTON, on which Michael Kinane is a significant booking, looks a safe wager to win the five furlongs Mallow Median Auction Maiden at Cork tonight.

Sweet Afton can confirm promise

Trainer Eamon Tyrrell has shown in the past he knows the time of day and this daughter of Mujadil has displayed distinct promise in two outings.

She started with a four lengths second to the very useful Leitra at Cork and then stepped up on that effort at Naas. Sweet Afton was beaten a short head and a length and a half into third behind Jim Bolger’s newcomer Modeeroch and Aidan O’Brien’s well-regarded Oh How Lovely and this appears the selection’s easiest assignment to date.

The one mile Mallow BBQ Maiden can surely be safely narrowed down to Jubilant Note and Who Could Tell.

Jubilant Note performed deplorably at the Curragh 13 days ago, trailing in 10th of 12 behind Milesius.

It is hard to reconcile that effort with the colt’s previous performance, when beaten half a length by Requested Pleasure at Leopardstown with subsequent winners, Tarkesar and Bonanza, in third and fourth respectively.

Who Could Tell represents in-form John Oxx and can be expected to come on a bundle for his third behind Manor Law and Tamworth at Limerick a week ago.

In the final analysis, Jubilant Note, blinkered for the first time, gets the vote.

At Wexford this evening, Willie Mullins’ Tauranga is fancied to reverse Ballinrobe running with Max Almighty in the Lynam Merit Maiden.

Max Almighty was beaten three parts of a length then by Camouflage, with Tauranga, who didn’t enjoy a clear passage in the closing stages, just half a length further away in third.

Tauranga looks to have the greater scope for improvement and should relish stepping up four furlongs in trip.
