Six O’Brien hopefuls left in French Derby
They are The Great Gatsby, Brian Boru, France, Handel, Alberto Giacometti and Balestrini.
Speaking yesterday, O’Brien said that all six will remain in the classic until the declaration stage this morning. Commented O’Brien: “It remains possible we won’t have a runner, but if we do then the two most likely to travel are Alberto Giacometti and Balestrini.”
Both of them had their latest outings in France, when contesting the Group One Prix Lupin at Longchamp 17 days ago. That race was won by the Aga Khan’s Dalakhani, trained by Alain de Royer Dupre, who is certain to start a warm favourite for the French Derby. Alberto Giacometti finished third in the Lupin, beaten a length and three quarters, with Balestrini a further two and a half lengths away fourth.
O’Brien gave the strongest hint yet regarding his likely line-up for the Epsom Derby on Saturday week. “I would imagine Brian Boru, The Great Gatsby and Hold That Tiger will run for us”, he confirmed. Dual Derby and Breeders’ Cup hero, High Chaparral, is back in full work following a minor hold-up. Said O’Brien: "He is working, but it will tighten him to make the King George.”
