Assignment not Beyond the Pole
If you were to take his latest effort at Galway literally then Dermot Weld’s charge may as well stay at home. He finished over 21 lengths sixth in the contest won by Golden Cross, never threatening at any stage to take a hand in the finish.
But the ground was very testing that day and Beyond The Pole simply cannot operate on such a surface.
Given fast ground at Downpatrick previously, he showed great battling qualities to defeat Mr Wong narrowly.
The selection was left on his original handicap mark and now has a sporting chance of taking advantage of that apparent generosity!
The featured Tattersalls (Ireland) Open Race looks a moderate event and a useful newcomer could easily do the business. There are two English challengers, but neither excites a great deal, so the final nod falls on Weld’s once-raced Colemanstown. He performed with some promise on his debut at Tipperary, not knocked about when five lengths fifth behind Vettriano.
Much interest in the Dunboyne Maiden will centre on Aidan O’Brien’s newcomer, Legion Of Honour. The son of Danehill won’t have to be any great shakes to take this, but a watching brief seems the best policy regarding Ballydoyle inmates at the moment and the vote goes to Twilight Breeze. She left a very poor effort at the Galway Festival behind her at the Curragh last time when a length and a half second to John Oxx’s well-regarded Relish.
