Waters hot favourite for Classic double

VIRGINIA WATERS is even-money favourite with sponsors Boylesports to emulate Attraction and complete the English/Irish 1000 Guineas double at the Curragh on Sunday.

Attraction made history by becoming the first filly to add the Irish version to her Newmarket victory 12 months ago and Virginia Waters is a warm order to follow suit.

Aidan O'Brien's filly was a most impressive winner at Newmarket on May 1, coming from virtually last to first under Kieren Fallon to win by two and a half lengths from Maids Causeway.

The daughter of Kingmambo heads 23 horses standing their ground at yesterday's final forfeit stage.

O'Brien has three more strings to his bow with Mona Lisa, Queen Titi and Silk And Scarlet.

Barry Hills' Maids Causeway could try to gain her revenge, while Joint Aspiration (13th) and Penkenna Princess (16th) are also engaged.

But the latter will only run if the forecast rain materialises.

Her trainer Ralph Beckett said: "She's in good form and working well but she will only run if they get the forecast rain.

"We want good ground or softer and if she does run, Seb Sanders will ride."

Beckett put down Penkenna Princess's poor performance at Newmarket to her dislike of the fast ground.

"It is simply the going she could not operate on it. She'd not run on ground that quick before so we did not know if she'd handle it."

The Lambourn trainer had been entitled to believe that Penkenna Princess would finish a lot closer as she had won the Group Three Dubai Duty Free Stakes at Newbury on her seasonal debut and had ended her two-year-old campaign when a short-head second to Maids Causeway in the Rockfel Stakes at Newmarket.

James Given, however, hopes the rain stays away from the Curragh for his runner Sheboygan, who booked her place with a smooth win at Lingfield last month.

"She's very well and she's improved for her Lingfield run. The handicapper must have found it difficult to assess that performance. He's put her up 11lb but it could have been 8lb or 15lb," said the Gainsborough trainer.

"I almost didn't run her as five minutes after declaration time I started to have second thoughts. I felt she was a bit backward and still woolly in her coat.

"Obviously it's a big step up and she's got to have improved a lot but we've not nothing to lose running her on Sunday.

"No-one will expect her to do much so the expectation level will be low but they only get one chance in life so we are going for it."

Johnny Murtagh, who partnered Sheboygan at Lingfield, has been booked for the ride.

Cheveley Park Stakes winner Magical Romance, Grand Girl and Titian Time complete the British challenge as David Elsworth has opted not to supplement Newmarket fifth Cape Columbine.

Elsworth told Teletext: "She's in good form but we haven't got a positive next target for her yet.

"We just thought the ground might be firm enough and they'll race on the same terms as at Newmarket so we decided not to supplement her."

David Wachman has left in star filly Damson but she faces a crucial workout later in the week to see if she has fully recovered from the setback which ruled her out at Newmarket. Wachman also has the option of running Luas Line, while Newmarket sixth Saoire will try again for Frances Crowley.

The field is completed by Almutamore, Anna Toran, Jazz Princess, National Swagger, Sanserif, Sky High Flyer, Slip Dance, Utterly Heaven and Yaria.

Boylesports Irish 1000 Guineas, sponsors bet: Evens Virginia Waters, 3-1 Damson, 4-1 Maids Causeway, Saoire, 12-1 Jazz Princess, 14-1 Sky High Flyer, 16-1 Magical Romance, Silk And Scarlet, Titian Time, 20-1 Bar.
