Carndale can collect

ROSCOMMON tonight, subject to wholesale balloting yesterday morning, has a grim appearance and there is little cause for optimism.

Noel Meade's Carndale is a hopeful nap choice in the J F Hanley Groundscare Handicap Chase. The eight-year-old was decidedly unlucky last time and should at least go close.

At Navan last month, Carndale was travelling strongly heading to the home turn, but was hampered when a horse fell in front off him turning in.

He rallied well and was closing all the way to the line, but still half a length adrift of Raheenboy.

Dermot Weld's newcomer, Striking Force, is the most interesting runner on the card in the Lynam Merit Maiden.

He is certainly bred to be a decent horse, by Danehill out of Trusted Partner, which makes him a full-brother to Dress To Thrill. Trusted Partner won the Irish 1000 Guineas, while Dress To Thrill's principal successes came in the Sun Chariot Stakes at Newmarket and the Matriarch Stakes at Hollywood Park in California.

Striking Force gets the nod ahead of National Express, runner-up behind another Weld inmate, Absolute Image, at Tipperary.

Keyfield Princess, fourth behind Timing at Punchestown, may prove the best of a dreadful lot in the Elphin Maiden Hurdle.
